Golden Egg Cafe
As I get older I find my pillow is my best friend. Like many of you I live for the opportunity to sleep in on Saturday morning. When I wake up with my best friend (my pillow) I can hear the birds singing and the sun is coming through my bedroom window. That’s the time when I wish my mom was in the kitchen and I could smell maple syrup and pancakes. But alas the only thing I can smell is the trash that I should have taken out before I went to bed on Friday night. Why can’t my mom live with me? I’m hungry and I don’t want to cook. It appears I will need to find a really great breakfast someplace other than my kitchen, because there is no way I am cooking, or doing dishes. I know you will agree with me when I say we need someone to fix us a great breakfast on Saturday morning. If I just had a personal chef or husband that could cook... that’s a funny one, “a husband that could cook”. How I wish I had been born rich instead of so good looking. Wait I forgot you guys saw my picture on the top of this page. Ok, I wish I had been born rich instead of such a liar.
Well, I have a great answer to this problem. You can get yourself out of bed and go down to the Golden Egg Cafe in Ventura. It’s a cute little yellow house with a great patio. But that’s not the best reason to go: you need to go for the cinnamon rolls. My mom never made anything like this. Good grief, these things are huge and made fresh every morning. They are not at all like those dry, puffy cinnamon rolls with a little icing on top; these babies are sweet, gooey all the way through. Keep in mind this is just your appetizer, so be sure to share this with at least two other people. Make sure you save room because they have great homemade quiches, biscuits and omelets. If you have a problem with sugar and really want pancakes, they carry a great brand of sugar-free syrup. I have not tasted the syrup as I don’t have a sugar problem, but my entire diabetic family tells me it’s great. Ok, are you ready for the kicker? They have fresh chile rellenos every morning served along side of your eggs and hash browns. Only in California does breakfast get this good! And I need to tell you that the chile rellenos are not mild flavored, so if you’re somewhat of a wimp you better skip these. But for the rest of us: go for it and you won’t be sorry.
I love living in California, life is good. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, it is spring again. We work so hard Monday though Friday and it seems like we are on a dead run all week long: so get up and get yourself some great breakfast and spend the first few hours every Saturday morning slowing down and enjoying life. Wow that sounded good maybe I have to write a column for the Journal of Mental Health.
